Can you wear mascara with lash extensions on?

Have you always dreamed of waking up every morning with long, full and dark lashes? Eyelashes that make your eyes look amazing without having to put on layers of mascara or spend time styling your lashes with an eyelash curler? Then lash extensions are a great choice. They can stay on for weeks, and you don

’t necessarily need mascara to make your eyes stand out. But what if you want an even more dramatic look? Then a swipe of mascara is indeed the perfect solution. But can you wear mascara with lash extensions on?

Use a water-based mascara

You can wear mascara with lash extensions on, but you need to make sure that the mascara you choose to apply is water-based. Waterproof and oil-based mascaras are an absolute no-go. Eyelash extensions are sensitive to oil. When oil comes in contact with the adhesive that holds your lash extensions in place, it starts to loosen the hold and your lash extensions will fall out faster.

Waterproof mascara causes problems when you want to remove it. That is almost impossible without some serious rubbing and using an oil-based make-up remover. These are both things you need to avoid. An oil-based make-up remover has the same effect as oil-based mascara, and serious rubbing will also damage the adhesive of your lash extensions.

How to apply mascara to lash extensions

So you can wear mascara while wearing lash extensions as long as you use a water-based one and apply it a little differently from what you’re used to. When you’re applying the mascara, you need to be extra careful, and you need to focus on the middle to tip area of the lash extension. It’s important not to start at the roots. If you apply the mascara from the root to the tip, like you normally do, the lash extensions will become too heavy and could be pulled out.

How to remove mascara from lash extensions

The follow-up question to can you wear mascara with lash extensions on is can you remove the mascara from your extensions? Yes, you can and should remove the mascara at the end of the day. Just like you would normally do. You do have to be extremely careful, though.

It’s best to use a water-based make-up remover wipe. This won’t get lint on your lash extensions as a cotton round would. On top of that, it doesn’t contain any oils, which, as we mentioned before, can loosen the adhesive that holds your eyelash extensions in place. It’s also important to be gentle when removing the mascara and to avoid serious rubbing with the remover wipe.

Reasons to wear mascara with lash extensions on

It’s not a must to wear mascara when you have lash extensions on. Even without it, they give you long, full and dark lashes. But there are a couple of reasons why you might decide to apply a thin layer of water-based mascara anyways. When you want a more dramatic look, for example. But you can also choose to use mascara when:

  • You want your upper and lower lashes to appear more balanced and uniform. In this case, you should focus on adding mascara to the lower lashes, while applying just a thin layer to the tips of the upper lashes.

  • Your natural lashes are brown and you’ve chosen matching brown extensions. You might want black lashes for a particular look, and you can use mascara to get that effect.

  • You want even more volume. It depends on the type of lash extensions, how thick they are, and if you still need some mascara to get the volume you want.

  • Your eyelash extensions have reached the end of their life and are beginning to fall out. In this case, you can use mascara to fill the gaps.

So, can you wear mascara with lash extensions on?

There are several reasons why you might want to wear mascara when wearing lash extensions. And it’s definitely possible to do so without damaging your extensions or shortening their lifespan. Using the right products and methods to apply and remove the mascara is important here. A good tip to remember is to never use oil-based products and always be gentle with your lash extensions.
